Do No Harm The People Who Amputate Their Perfectly Healthy Limbs and the Doctors Who Help Them (Audible Audio Edition) Anil Ananthaswamy Anna Pickard MATTER Books Reviews

Anil Ananthaswamy does a great job of bringing this relatively new psychological disorder to the mainstream. His writing focuses on the patients effected and what they go through in their lives. I was not unfamiliar with this type of body dysmorphic disorder. There was a film called "Quid Pro Quo" that addressed both the patients and wannabe's who felt their bodies were incomplete with the usual amount of limbs. Ananthaswamy's writing does even more to make this disorder understandable to both laymen and suffers. I wish there were more information for those suffering, where to go to seek treatment, etc.; however, it is still an amazing read.
I hadn't heard of this disorder before, at least, not directly. I remember seeing something on television once where a man was having a perfectly good leg removed, but it was suspected to be causing pain. Then the leg was gone, yet the pain wasn't. However, that's not the same thing as BIID at all. It is absolutely fascinating that a leg or other body part can be in all ways except in the mind, perfect, yet the person attached to said body part wants it gone. And they are truly happier with it gone. As a runner, I was absolutely horrified by the idea, yet fascinated at the same time. Personally, I would think that whether the leg was perceived as mine or not, I would want it so long as I could run on it. But apparently that is not always the case. Very interesting read.
No fun for the people who have this psychological disorder however, but jaw dropping and entertaining for people without it.

The condition is very well explained in this book so it becomes easy to understand the frustrations of the people with this "extra limb". Incredulous as it may seem they view a part of their body as alien, something that does not belong to them so they want to be rid of it at any cost, even to the extent of making themselves permanently disabled. The majority of us could not imagine such a seemingly senseless thing and cringe at the thought, so it's with a kind of "car crash" attraction which pulls one into reading this book, - you can't resist looking.

It is only a short book so a quick read. But at the end, it makes you glad you are normal, (normal in relation to these people anyway) and you feel you have learned something you never knew before.

Empathy is very short here I am afraid. Sympathy? I suppose I would have plenty if someone I knew had this condition, although overcoming exasperation must be very difficult. The people who care for them are to be commended.
David is suffering from Body Integrity Identity Disorder. He believes that his leg is not his. It is "other". He experiences it as a foreign body that poisons his perception of his life. This article is about his search for a way to rid himself of what he regards as a "growth". The author also does a comprehensive review of the literature as to the cause and the progression of this pereception.

This is not a sensationalist amputee story. It is not judgmental nor does it take any position on the debate concerning voluntary amputation. I found the article to be compassionate. However the author supplies a great deal of supplemental information. I know that the brain is just beginning to be understood. It is probably more to the point that we are still primitive explorers in the world of self perception. As the author points out, the plastic surgeons are deluged with people who view part of their bodies as foreign to themselves. We are used to this being a nose or breasts. Not all plastic surgery is driven by vanity.

In any case, I would recommend this story to anyone who wishes to broaden their understanding of the human condition.
I found this book to be quite informative and sensitively written. I was aware of the existence of BIID before reading this book, but hadn't found a good layman accessible book that wasn't too technical or indepth and which wasn't sensationalized and/or overly interested in portraying the people affected as freaks or deviants.

I really hope that future research allows for non-surgical treatment options that work for these people and their families... but until then, I have no doubt that this book can help people and their loved ones understand what they're dealing with a little more clearly and help them not feel so isolated and alone.

Very well done. I saw another reviewer comment that the writing wasn't up to scratch, and I must respectfully disagree. In my own assessment, I found the writing well suited to the material and very sensitively handled. The author wasn't showing the patient histories as anything freakish or sensationalized and I for one appreciated his even-handed portrayal of them and their families. I found these real people sensitively portrayed and very compelling.

Thank you for an interesting read.
